Disaster struck a mining world, releasing a crystal which turns living sentient into walking corpses across the mainland, feasting on anyone who wasn't corrupted. The remaining living sentient gather on islands, believing they were saved by the acidic ocean surrounding them until help can arrive.

The avian sentient was gravely miskate. Corpses walk across the ocean floors, ready to feast on the unsuspected avians.
