After her parents are killed by bandits when she is only an infant, the local villagers raise Lilly until Whyn, a wandering master of the mysterious power known as the Gift, discovers her and offers her a new life as one of the Chosen. Lilly soon finds herself with a new name, Illuran, and living in a mountaintop fortress, spending her days learning how to harness the Gift while navigating the pitfalls of adolescence. Illuran yearns for a life of adventure, while Master Whyn hopes that she can use her humble origins to help bridge the growing gap between those who have the Gift, and those who don't. When she saves the life of a boy from the outside, she learns that the world is a more complicated and dangerous place than she ever knew.
