Instead of becoming proving his skill by culling monsters that plague the land, Soletus is given a different assignment. It isn't one that doesn’t test his physical strength, but his strength of character. He is paired up with a shy and traumatized boy named Mien to get him to talk about what happened to him. A feat that is more difficult than he realizes.

Soletus doesn’t know how to help, and his resolve to do so starts to waiver. Then Mien does something unexpected, an act of bravery. Soletus then decides that the boy deserves a second chance not just as an act of duty, but as a friend.
